It affects much more\nthan just your gums. During the first stage, called gingivitis, the gums become\nred and swollen because of toxins that are released by the harmful bacteria\nfound in your mouth. In the second stage, periodontitis, these toxins eventually\ncause the gums to recede or pull away from your teeth, forming pockets of\ntrapped plaque and food particles. As they penetrate deeper, the bacteria then\nattack teeth\u2019s supporting tissue and bone, causing permanent damage. Without\ntreatment, eventually gum disease leads to tooth loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nearly half of American adults 30 years of age and older\nhave periodontitis, and that percentage jumps up to 70% for adults 65 and\nolder. But the good news is that gum disease is treatable. Through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.andersondentalgahanna.com\/periodontal-therapy.html\">periodontal\ntherapy<\/a>, your dentist can restore your smile\u2019s health. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is heart disease?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Heart disease is a term used to refer many problems, a majority\nof which are related to a process called atherosclerosis, which consists of\nplaque building up in the walls of the arteries. As the buildup narrows the arteries,\nit becomes harder for blood to flow through. If there is a blood clot, it can\nblock the flow and cause a heart attack or stroke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One in every four deaths is caused by heart disease, making\nit the leading cause of death for both women and men. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How are gum disease and heart disease connected?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Although it is difficult to determine causation, studies\nhave certainly found a link between gum disease and heart disease. In these\nstudies, gum disease was found to increase a person\u2019s risk of heart disease by\n20%, and cardiovascular care costs were significantly higher for those who had\npoor oral health. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are several theories in the medical and dental fields about\nhow these disease can be related. One says that when gum disease progresses, especially\nto periodontitis, the bacteria that cause gum disease are more likely to be able\nto enter the bloodstream through the blood vessels in your gums. These bacteria\ncan then cause inflammation in your arteries throughout your body. More\nresearch is needed to better establish the relationship between these two\nserious diseases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the end, the connection between heart disease and gum\ndisease is clear enough for the American Heart Association and American Dental\nAssociation that both have acknowledged a relationship between the two\nconditions.
