The next time you visit the dentist, you may notice some newer technologies, namely the ultrasonic scaler and the air polisher. But what’s the difference between these two devices, and how are they used to improve the health and appearance of your smile? Here’s a closer look!
What Is an Ultrasonic Scaler?
If you’ve ever had your teeth professionally cleaned, you are likely already familiar with a dental scaler. This metal tool resembles a hook and is used to essentially scrape the plaque and tartar buildup off the surface of your teeth, reducing your risk of cavities and gum disease and making your smile appear whiter and brighter.
While manual scalers have been used in dental cleanings since the early 18th century, today’s ultrasonic scalers were first introduced in the 1950s. They use very fast sonic vibrations to break up the buildup on your teeth while using the hooklike end to scrape it. Then, the device sprays the teeth with water to rinse away the debris and prevent the machine from overheating in the process. They are ideal for patients with a lot of buildup and can clean the teeth both above and below the gumline.
What Is an Air Polisher?
Although it can clear away buildup, the air polisher is a little different from the ultrasonic scaler in that it is designed to polish the surface of the teeth, removing any roughness on the enamel that could make it easier for bacteria and biofilm to adhere to your smile. It uses a mixture of air, water, and a fine powder usually made of glycine or sodium bicarbonate to essentially sandblast plaque and minor surface stains away without harming the enamel.
Air polishing is an excellent option for patients who have very clean teeth already, or prior to professional whitening, and as a finishing touch on teeth which have just been deep cleaned by the ultrasonic scaler.
Working Together: The Benefits of Combining Technologies
While choosing just one of these teeth cleaning devices can make a vast improvement in the appearance and health of your smile, when used together, the ultrasonic scaler and air polisher can deliver a healthier, gleaming grin quickly and comfortably.
